17th Street Overlook Garden

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

In 1996, SSCO invested significant NRP resources into the installation of a 5-block greenway -- decorative sidewalk, lighting and landscaping -- stretching along the I-94 embankment from 3rd Avenue to the LaSalle Community Garden.  The most elaborate of these gardens, the 17th Street Overlook, incorporates several styles of flower garden, with a magnificent view of the downtown skyline beyond.  Community volunteers maintain this garden and maturing trees.

The Stevens Square Community Organization and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board are joining forces to continue beautifying the 17th Street overlook. We have already started with the two flower beds that border the overlook between Stevens and Second Avenue, and our aim is to create an interpretive garden along the fence area that creates a habitat for birds and butterflies with native plantings. We would love to get neighbors and families involved in creating this habitat.

During the summer we have several work days with volunteers to come out and help plant, maintain and create beauty. The workdays are generally Saturday mornings at 9am lasting for a couple hours. Tools and treats are provided. Watch for the first workday coming up in early June or contact Robert (info below).
