Community gardening and green space is a critical issue for Stevens Square-Loring Heights, one of Minneapolis' most densely-populated neighborhoods.  Because the vast majority of residents live in apartment buildings, almost no one has a back yard.  Because of this, the SSCO is always looking for new ways for neighborhood residents to be able to have a connection with the earth.  SSCO has and will continue to:

  • transform derelict lots and create in their place beautiful, natural spaces for people to enjoy
  • create opportunities for neighborhood residents to get to know one another and work together for a better neighborhood
  • find ways to get residents out in the neighborhood, enhancing community safety

Two neighborhood gardens help acheive these goals. Garden Plots are available for the Emily Peake and LaSalle Community Gardens. The cost per garden plot start at $25.00 per season, which also includes tools and water.

Stevens Square Community Organization is also looking for volunteer gardeners to beautify the 17th Street Overlook.
